Sony PSP: Revolutionary?

Its features, um… a 3 inch LCD screen, it’s like the first device to have one of those, ever.

Thanks again FOX 5 news for your informative interviews-on-the-street. I guess my PDA’s 3.7 inch LCD screen technically isn’t 3 inches.

Welcome Back Slackware

I couldn’t get Debian to work without hanging, so I tossed it. Instead I downloaded Slackware 10.1 and set that up, it was relatively painless actually. Now typing this from Firefox, using GNOME. Shocked that it’s not slower. Oh, also very happy that my wireless card no longer drops connections periodically, but I would like a battery indicator that wasn’t stuck on 0%.

Another note, Samba for some reason works better on this (i.e. it sees a Windows laptop) than it does on my desktop running Fedora. Hmm.

Next up? Testing suspend mode, getting Samba to work correctly, and figuring out how to best use this as a server and usable laptop.

For the curious, I decided to name this deberon.skidde.net, as in misspelled preterite form of “deber,” Spanish for “should.” There’s some meaning in there somewhere.

Installing Debian

So, I decided to get rid of Slackware on my laptop in favor of Debian, and so far it hasn’t been so great. I wanted to get rid of Slackware because I thought it was too hard to deal with (and I probably screwed up the installation to some extent, it was my first go-round) and I wanted to get some actual use out of my laptop.

Problem so far is that I can’t get Debian to want to install. First it hung on trying to set up sendmail, and then after each boot it stopped when loading boottime.kmap.gz. So it’s time for a format and a reinstallation that I don’t touch too much this time.

Update: So much for that, it froze again during installation. Why bother?

Google, Autolinking, and all the Fuss

Google’s had fun pushing its AutoLink functionality, and as would be expected there are those — particularly in the blogosphere — who have voiced their opposition (some more vocally than others).

The problem with AutoLink is that it transparently alters the content of an author’s page, all without the author’s knowledge, consent, or ability to remove such functionality (and remember, Google puts the fun in functionality). To the best of my knowledge the links aren’t even marked with a rel=”autolink” or something similar that would allow an author to note those links in an aesthetically pleasing manner (although requiring developers to have to opt-out of transparency is still backwards).

Tyranny of EULAs

PPCT posts a link to this short but interesting article from the BBC on EULAs. I’d like to say I make an honest attempt to actually read them once in awhile, but then again I figure it doesn’t really matter since minors can’t enter into contracts anyway.

But somewhat seriously, EULAs are out of hand. It’s gotten sad when these things come to 7 printed pages or more of legalese, and in order to read the whole thing you typically need to open the program anyway. Isn’t it sort of obvious that the (commercial) software industry doesn’t really want us reading these things anyway?

Google Likes Googlebar?

Apparently so. That’s the page that shows up when you try to load the Google Toolbar page in Mozilla/Firefox, though. Bit of interesting conversation on how they got linked, just be sure to scroll down a bit.
